effects of disasters
Each natural disaster in Haiti's history had similar effects. For example, each of the disasters caused hundreds of thousands of deaths. The casualties from each disaster ranged from 1,000 to 300,000 people. Not only were people killed, but in each disaster millions were left homeless due to the destruction of their homes. The high winds, flying debris, and tsunami waves caused immense structural damage.
Due to intense rains, flooding, and debris, crops were destroyed and water was contaminated. Most of the past natural disasters were followed by food and water shortages because crops weren't being harvested and water sources were still contaminated with debris. Many survivors would die of starvation or excessive thirst before rescuers could reach them.
Torrential rainfall would cause erosion and several mudslides. Many of the trees in Haiti were cut down, leaving large areas of vulnerable dirt fields throughout the country.
Waterborne diseases were rampant post hurricane/earthquake. Not only because the water was contaminated, but also because the Haitians did not have the medical tools needed to prevent or cure infections. Many people who survived the initial disaster would die due to untreated medical issues.
After many of the natural disasters, the nations communication and transportation infrastructures were severely damaged. Almost all of the cell phone coverage was knocked out, many of the roads were ruined and were not usable, ports for ships were often destroyed due to high tide or tsunami waves, and there was limited air travel. This made rescue efforts difficult.
Another effect of the earthquake included a spike in the crime rate. The police force was busy looking for survivors and trying to provide survival tools to the injured, which left room for theivery and looting. The police began to respond with harsh, undetected treatment of the citizens within haiti.
